The Mardi Himal trek is a beginner-friendly trek in Nepal. Its difficulty is considered moderate as per the Himalayan standards. So, can all first-time trekkers complete the Mardi Himal trek? It depends on their fitness.

You do not need to be extremely fit to do the Mardi Himal trek, but a basic fitness with willpower is needed. It is not a very easy trek, but also not an advanced trek.

If you have made up your mind to begin your trekking journey in Nepal, the Mardi Himal trek could be an excellent choice for you. The Mardi Himal trek route is easy to follow, but the constant ascents and descents make it tough.

*Please note that the Mardi Himal trek is also widely known as the Mardi Himal Base Camp trek.

You will trek through dense forests for the first few days and gradually hike above the tree line. Basically, the trail goes from lush forests to alpine ridgelines in just three days of walking.

And this is what we love about the Mardi Himal trek where you get to experience all of the climatic zones in a very short time. Unlike the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp treks, which are also considered moderate in difficulty, the Mardi Himal trek is much more achievable.

Moreover, it also has a lower risk of altitude sickness. The highest point you hike to during the Mardi Himal trek is 4,500 meters. It is the Mardi Himal Base Camp, and you do not spend a night at this elevation.

Trekkers who are looking for an adventurous trek in Nepal, but also not so high in altitude and less risk of altitude sickness, should definitely go for the Mardi Himal trek. The experience, adventure, and natural encounters this trek offers in a very short time are impeccable.

Not to mention, the mountain views are also extremely breathtaking during the Mardi Himal trek. In fact, you will get to behold some of the finest views of the Annapurna range and Mt. Fishtail on this trek.

The cultural and mountain lifestyle part is a bit lacking on the Mardi Himal trek, but you will have an opportunity in Sidding village (at the end of the trek) to see the life of mountain people.

Overall, the 9 days Mardi Himal trek is quite an enjoyable and satisfying trek in the Annapurna region in Nepal.

What is it like trekking in the Western Himalayan region in Nepal?

The Western Himalayan region in Nepal houses mountains such as Annapurna, Fishtail, Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, Manaslu, etc. It is home to many incredible trekking routes, including the Mardi Himal trail.

Trekking in this region is adventurous and exciting for sure, but also culturally enriching and naturally uplifting. In case of the Mardi Himal trek 9 days, you will have a solid wilderness experience.

The Mardi Himal trek is famous as an alternative to the famous Annapurna Base Camp trek in the Annapurna region. It is less established, so the trek experience is quite authentic.

This has made the Mardi Himal trek popular, especially among the locals, which has led to crowded trails. Still, if you plan your Mardi Himal trek departure date, you can skip the crowd and enjoy a very peaceful journey.

The nights stop on the Mardi Himal trek route are not particularly villages. They are built as the demand for this trek increases. Therefore, the cultural experience is less on this trek.

The Mardi Himal trek route is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, which is the largest conservation area (7,629 km²). It mainly protects the Annapurna range and the biodiversity and locals in this area.

Even though the Mardi Himal trek has significantly gained popularity, it remains lacking in terms of trekking infrastructure. There are limited teahouses, so if you have not prebooked your accommodation, you may not get a room and end up sleeping in the dining area.

On the bright side, it offers an authentic trekking experience without over-commercialization. If you want to see the majestic mountains of the Western Himalayan range in Nepal, the Mardi Himal trek is a great option.

Essential Information

How much should you tip your guide and porter?

Tipping the guide and porter at the end of the trek is necessary. You can tip 15% to 25% of the package cost or whatever amount you think is okay.

*Tipping the guide and porter is a culture in Nepal and is expected from tourists. So, kindly understand and respect it.

Mardi Himal trek accommodation

There are teahouses available in all resting points along the Mardi Himal trek route where trekkers can spend the night. The teahouses are not that fancy or anything, but you will have a clean and cozy space to spend the night.

In the peak trekking seasons, teahouses are mostly packed, so sharing rooms becomes mandatory. For single rooms, we recommend you let us know at the time of booking. It will also cost you a few extra bucks.

The rooms are not heated, so you have to carry sleeping bags. Teahouses give blankets, but they may not be enough to keep you warm through the night. The dining area is heated.

Wardrooms are normally shared between the trekkers. Some places have Western-style toilets, but you may have to use squat toilets as well. We highly recommend packing toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

You can also charge your electronic devices in the teahouses, but it will cost you a few extra bucks. Backup like a solar power bank and spare batteries are recommended.

What kind of food is available on the Mardi Himal trek?

In our Mardi Himal trek package, you will get breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily during trekking. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, we only provide breakfast. You have to buy lunches and dinners in both cities by yourself.

The food option is decent on the Mardi Himal trek. You will mostly have Nepali dishes like dal bhat, thukpa, thenduk, momo, chowemin, and stew. There will be some other options also, such as fried rice, porridge, pasta, soups, pancakes, eggs, toast, noodles, etc.

Food tips:

  • During trekking, we recommend opting for vegetarian meals because they are freshly cooked. Meats are mostly frozen, and the freezing system is not that great in every place.
  • If you have any allergies, be mindful of that and also inform your guide.
  • Keep yourself hydrated and definitely drink soups and warm tea (ginger-honey tea is highly recommended) daily.
  • Pack snacks and bars for the trek. You can carry dried fruits, trail mixes, protein bars, chocolates, waiwai (instant noodles), and other snacks.
  • Do not leave your meals and have carbs daily. You need energy to walk 6 hours a day on rugged mountainous terrain.

Mardi Himal trek difficulty

On the Mardi Himal trek, you will trek through densely forested hills, narrow valleys, and high ridges. It is a beginner-friendly trek, but the terrain is a bit on the offbeat side.

Although previous trekking experience is not required for the Mardi Himal trek, it is important that you are in good shape. You will walk around 6 hours a day on this trek, which means you have to be fit.

Compared to other high-altitude treks in Nepal, the Mardi Himal trek sees a little less elevation gain. So, the risk of altitude sickness is a bit low on this trek. Still, do not underestimate the effects of high altitude.

Likewise, the facilities on the Mardi Himal trek route are also fewer. Trekkers have to adjust to simple tea houses and bare minimum services. Overall, the Mardi Himal trek difficulty is considered moderate as per the Himalayan standards.

Altitude sickness and how to avoid it

On the Mardi Himal trek, you will trek up to 4,500 meters. You will reach this elevation in four days of hiking from the starting point of the trail. The rise in elevation is quite a lot in just four days of walking.

However, you will not spend a night at 4,500 meters and descend to 3,210 meters to sleep. The overall balance of gradual altitude gain lowers the risk of altitude sickness during the Mardi Himal trekking.

Still, you have to be careful of its symptoms and follow the preventive measures, which we have shared below:

Symptoms: Headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, and breathlessness. These are some early signs of altitude sickness. Be aware of them.

Preventive measures:

  • Drink at least 2 liters of water daily.
  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke. You have to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Ascend slowly and maintain a uniform pace.
  • Do not rush to match the other trekkers' speed.
  • Listen to your body.
  • Take frequent, quick breaks to catch long breaths and hydrate yourself.

Travel insurance for the Mardi Himal trek

While doing any trek in the Himalayas, it is a must that you are backed up by reliable travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation. The Himalayan region in Nepal is not connected to the rest of the country.

Walking is the only way to travel in and out of this region. So, a helicopter evacuation coverage is helpful in case you get sick or hurt during traveling or any other unseen circumstance arises.

We recommend all travelers planning to do the Mardi Himal trek buy well-covered travel insurance, and it must include helicopter evacuation up to 4,500 meters.

Mardi Himal trek permit

Two permits are required for the Mardi Himal trek. We have mentioned both of them with their fee below:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit cost: USD 30 per person
  • TIMS Card: USD 20 per person

Mardi Himal trek best time

The best time to trek in Nepal, including the Mardi Himal trek, is spring and autumn. These seasons have ideal weather and climate conditions in the Himalayas for travel.

From March to April (spring), the Mardi Himal trek route is exceptionally stunning because of the rhododendron blooms. The scenery is exquisite, and the mountain views are crystal clear.

Autumn begins around late September and lasts till November (autumn). Trekking between these months allows you to celebrate the biggest Nepalese festivals. Likewise, the air is crisp and the landscapes are breathtaking.

Mardi Himal trek in winter

If you lov snow and winter landscapes, then we highly recommend the Mardi Himal trek in the winter season (December to February). It is an offseason for trekking, but ideal for trekkers who want peaceful trails.

There are no domestic flights on this trip, so you do not have to worry about the delays. Make sure to pack warm clothes and essentials.

Mardi Himal trek in summer/monsoon

You can do the Mardi Himal trek in summer. But be ready for a hot climate, especially at lower elevations. The climate is cold in higher areas, but daytime remains quite hot.

The vegetation is thriving in summer. So, if you are interested in the biodiversity of the Annapurna region, this is your perfect time to do the Mardi Himal trek.

Summer and monsoon go hand in hand. So, you may face rainfall. Prepare for rainy weather. Once rainfall begins, the trails become slippery and muddy, and there are leeches and other bugs.

Communication during the Mardi Himal trek

The mobile network is not reliable along the Mardi Himal trail. After leaving Kande, the network does not function properly, and the quality deteriorates the higher you ascend.

Likewise, there is WiFi in some places along the trail, but the connection is not strong. It is best to consider the Mardi Himal trek as a brief escape from the digital world and an opportunity to enjoy nature.

Charging and hot showers

You can charge your devices at all night stops along the Mardi Himal trek route by paying a few extra bucks. Spare batteries and a power bank are recommended.

Likewise, hot showers are also available in places at an extra charge, but we do not recommend bathing daily during the trek because of the cold climate. Keep a balance between taking a shower and keeping yourself refreshed with wet tissues.

Nepal travel visa

Trekkers have to obtain the Nepal travel visa by themselves. It is easy to acquire. You can get it from the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate Office in your country or upon landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Trekkers from a few countries cannot obtain the on-arrival travel visa, so kindly check your country's travel visa status for Nepal on this site. Note that our Mardi Himal trek package does not cover the visa fee.
