Annapurna Base Camp trek itinerary

You will begin the Annapurna Base Camp trek with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From Pokhara, drive to Nayapul and start hiking from here.

On the first day of the trek, you will ascend to Tikhedhunga (1,480 m/4,855 ft) or Ulleri (1,960 m/5,430 ft) village. The trail is easy going till Tikhedhunga, but the ascent to Ulleri includes climbing several stone staircases.

It can be quite challenging for some trekkers. Likewise, from Ulleri, you will walk through rhododendron and oak-covered hills to Ghorepani village (2,860 m/9,385 ft).

The next day, enjoy a beautiful sunrise and an impressive panorama of the western Himalayan range that includes more than 20 mountains from Poon Hill (3,210 m/10,525 ft).

After that, you will descend back to Ghorpeani and trek to Tadapani (2,630 m/8,628 ft). Leaving Tadapani, you will hike to Chhomrong village (2,170 m/7,119 ft) to join the main Annapurna Base Camp trail.

Spend a night in Chhomrong and hike to Dovan the next day. On the way, you will cross a suspension bridge over Chhomrong Khola and follow a steep uphill path to Upper Sinuwa.

From here, you will trek for another two hours to reach Dovan (2,600 m/8,530 ft). After Dovan, you will ascend to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m/12,139 ft), passing through the Himalaya Hotel and Deurali on the way.

These two are also famous resting points on the ABC trek route. Deurali onwards, the trail enters the Annapurna Sanctuary and also passes by the Hinku Cave.

On the 9th day of the trip, you will hike for three more hours to reach Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m/7,578 ft). The trail from Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp is narrow and steep.

You will be surrounded by mountains and glaciers at the base camp. The sight you will behold here is truly magical and life-changing.

Here comes the unexpected thing: you get to spend the night at Annapurna Base Camp, which is not possible in most base camp treks in Nepal, including the Everest Base Camp.

Start the next day early with a beautiful sunrise over the mountains and have a big breakfast before descending to Bamboo (2,310 m/7,578 ft). You will use the same trail that you used to ascend.

From Bamboo, your last walk will be Jhinu Danda (1,780 m/6,393 ft). Here, you will get to enjoy natural hot springs. Drive back to Pokhara for a night's stay and travel to Kathmandu the next day.

Annapurna Base Camp trek best time

The Annapurna Base Camp trek route is in the best condition in the spring and autumn seasons. You will enjoy the best mountain views and have a fantastic trek experience in these two seasons.

Likewise, winter and summer/monsoon periods are considered off-season for the Annapurna Base Camp trek because of challenging weather and poor trail conditions.

We have shared more in detail about each season below that will help you pick the right time to do the Annapurna Base Camp trek as per your interest:

Spring (March-May):

Spring is the pre-monsoon period and the transition season between winter and summer/monsoon. In spring, the weather and climate in the Himalayas become stable.

The environment is best for trekking. You will enjoy pleasant temperatures, sturdy trails, good visibility, and excellent mountain vistas. There can be occasional rainfall or snowfall in March, but it will not affect the trek.

The best thing about the spring season is the low-hill blooms with rhododendrons and many other flowers. Likewise, the mid-hills are also teeming with greenery.

Autumn (September-November):

September to November is the most famous time for trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp. October is especially the finest time of the year to explore the Himalayas.

The daylight hours are longest in this month, so you will have ample time to enjoy trekking and the views. Autumn is the post-monsoon period. Occasional rainfall is seen till mid-September.

From late September, the weather begins to stabilize, and the trails are mostly dry. The rivers and waterfalls are beautiful due to the monsoon rain. You can see the greenery fading as the day passes by.

The vibrant colors of autumn make the trails quite pretty. Likewise, Nepali people celebrate most of their major festivals in autumn, so the environment is quite delightful and divine.

Winter (December-February)

When winter arrives, everything gets quiet in the Himalayas. Although winter trekking is not impossible, you have to be very well prepared for the cold climate.

If you love traveling in the winter season or if you don't mind the cold, you will enjoy the Annapurna Base Camp trek between December and February. The peace is at the next level in this season.

The daylight hours are shortest in winter, so you have to start walking early. The landscapes are phenomenal. Mountain views are most clear. If the sky is not cloudy, you will be embraced by the warmth of the sun.

Summer/Monsoon (June-August)

Annapurna Base Camp trek in the summer/monsoon is very challenging weather-wise. The frequent heavy rainfall makes the trail muddy and slippery.

There is a high activity of leeches in the lower elevation. Likewise, the mountain views may be blocked due to a cloudy sky. The temperature fluctuates a lot, as does the weather.

However, vegetation, rivers, and waterfalls are teeming in this season. Trekking in summer/monsoon is a very niche choice and only recommended to trekkers who love rainy weather.

Annapurna Base Camp trek difficulty

The difficulty level of the Annapurna Base Camp trek is moderate. However, if you are not used to walking long hours and if you are not in good shape, the Annapurna Base Camp trek can get challenging for you.

So, if you have made up your mind to do this trek, you first have to take care of your fitness. Start exercising and improve your stamina and strength before the trek begins.

The challenges of the Annapurna Base Camp trek are:

  • Approximately 6 hours of walking each day.
  • The rugged terrain and constant ascents and descents.
  • High altitude and varying climate.
  • In spring, the Deurali to Machhapuchhare Base Camp section has avalanche risk. This section of the trail is also narrow and tough to navigate.

Annapurna Base Camp trek distance

Following our Annapurna Base Camp trek itinerary, you will walk around 90 kilometers. Usually, the Annapurna Base Camp trek distance is 70 km to 110 km.

Altitude sickness during the ABC trek

If you do not pay attention to acclimatization during the Annapurna Base Camp trek, you may suffer from altitude sickness. Altitude sickness risks increase above 2,500 meters.

It happens because you are not used to a high altitude environment that includes low air pressure and low oxygen levels. So, we recommended trekkers to ascend slowly. By ascending slowly, you will give yourself time to get used to high altitude.

Common symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, feeling dizzy, breathlessness, no appetite, feeling sick, trouble sleeping, vomiting, etc. If you see these signs, get first aid from your guide and listen to his advice.

To avoid altitude sickness during the Annapurna Base Camp trek, follow the tips below:

  • Drink 2 to 3 liters of water daily. Additionally, include soups and ginger-honey teas in your meals.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol while ascending. These things dehydrate your body and increase the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Eat high-energy food like rice or pasta for lunch.
  • Do not hesitate to take frequent short breaks while hiking.
  • Listen to your body and pay attention to symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Do not rush and keep a steady pace while hiking.

Annapurna Base Camp trek accommodation

You will stay in lodges during the Annapurna Base Camp trek. There are many villages on the Annapurna Base Camp trek route where trekkers spend nights.

Villagers take care of accommodation and meals for the trekkers. Rooms are basic and small but comfortable and cozy. Shared rooms and bathrooms are common.

The attached bathroom is only available in a few lodges, and we do not guarantee it. Likewise, you will also get to spend a night at Annapurna Base Camp because there are a couple of lodges nearby.

*For single rooms, kindly let us know in advance.

*Services like charging, hot shower, and WiFi cost extra money in lodges, so carry money for personal expenses and have backups like a power bank, wet tissue, etc.

Food and drinking water on the Annapurna Base Camp trek

You will get freshly cooked meals during the Annapurna Base Camp trekking. In our trek package, you will get three meals a day. You can choose the dish from the menu.

We recommend having soups and ginger-honey tea daily. Likewise, do not eat raw veggies or salads at high altitudes. Sometimes, raw veggies can give you indigestion.

Likewise, we also do not recommend eating meat above Chhomrong to avoid any indigestion or stomach issues. There are many vegetarian options available. Boiled water is also available everywhere for drinking.

In general, your breakfast will include porridge, Tibetan bread, eggs, pancakes, toast, etc. Likewise, for lunch and dinner, you can have dal bhat, fried rice, noodles, momo, pasta, stew, soups, thukpa, thenduk, etc.

Travel insurance

The Annapurna Base Camp trekking route is a remote area with no development. If any emergency occurs while trekking, helicopter evacuation is the only way to immediately travel back to Pokhara.

Without travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation, you have to pay a large amount for rescue. Not only that, without travel insurance coverage, arranging rescue is also difficult for us because of the payment guarantee.

So, we recommend trekkers to buy travel insurance for the Annapurna Base Camp trek and bring the document with them. Note that it should cover helicopter rescue up to 4,000 meters.
