Everest Base Camp Trek is the most iconic, popular, and an OG trek in the world. It is a 14 days of adventure in Nepal that takes you to the south base camp of the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest.

The journey begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, the city of temples and the capital of Nepal. The bustle, warmth, and divinity of this city will leave a big impression on you.

You will have an evening here to shop for the trek and pack your duffel bags. Our team will help you. You can also rent high-quality trekking gear if you do not want to spend a lot of money on it.

From Kathmandu, you will take the thrilling Lukla flight and begin trekking to Everest Base Camp (EBC). In eight days of walking from Lukla, you will reach EBC and spend one more morning hiking to Kala Patthar.

After that, you will follow the same trail back to Lobuche village and take a detour through Pheriche that brings you back to Namche Bazaar. From here, you will descend back to Lukla.

In between Lukla and Everest Base Camp, you will spend nights in Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep villages.

These are the top resting points along the Everest Base Camp trek route. All of these villages are inhabited by Sherpas and other communities such as Rai, Lama, Limbu, and Bhoitya.

Traversing through rhododendron-covered hills and crossing several suspension bridges, you will ascend above tree line. The trail then goes through alpine terraces, barren meadows, and glacier moraines.

We take two acclimatization breaks during the Everest Base Camp trek 14 days. Acclimatization breaks are made to help you rest, recover, and adjust to elevation to avoid altitude sickness.

We have acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche villages. Acclimatization days also provide you with the opportunity to spend a longer time with the locals, seeing their lifestyle and listening to their stories.

  • The Everest Base Camp trek is adventurous and culturally enriching in some ways, too. But the greatest impact is left by breathtaking mountains and heavenly landscapes.
  • Regardless of the bustle in spring and autumn, you will have many moments to soak in the serenity and calmness of the high alpine region.
  • You will see many mountains during the EBC trek, and some of them are the tallest peaks on Earth. You will see Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Baruntse, etc.
  • Standing in front of these mountains will be a humbling experience. Likewise, the hospitality of the locals and their kind gesture will win your heart.

There is no other trek like Everest Base Camp, and we cannot compare it to any other trek in the Himalayas!

A typical day on the Everest Base Camp trek

The Everest Base Camp trek is a 14 day trip. In those 14 days in Nepal, you will spend 11 days in the mountains and 3 days traveling to/from the trailhead.

In 11 days in the mountains, you will spend each day walking 5 to 7 hours, depending on your pace. The day begins early at around 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM.

You will freshen up, change, and have breakfast. After that, prepare your duffel bag and begin trekking. It is a custom to have dinner and breakfast in the lodge where you spend the night, and lunch on the day.

So, you will follow this practice. The elevation increases by around 500 meters every day. The guide will lead the way, and the porter will carry the duffel bag.

Porters are usually ahead of the group, so we recommend packing all essentials that you may need during hiking in your daypack. For example, pack SPF, lipbalm, snacks, waterbottle, chargers, powerbanks, documents, money, camera, etc, in your daypack.

Upon reaching the lodge where you will spend the night, the first thing we do is place our dinner order. We freshen up, rest, and socialize with fellow trekkers while the lodge prepares the dinner.

The next day, repeat the same thing.

Cultural experiences during the Everest Base Camp trek

The main cultural highlight of the Everest Base Camp trek is the traditions of the Sherpas and other mountain communities' spiritual connection to the mountains and natural wonders.

*If you want to experience local culture closely, you can trek during the Mani Rimdu festival.

On the way to Everest Base Camp, you will explore Tengboche Monastery and Pangboche Monastery. These are two important temples in the region.

Likewise, you can see many sections of the trail fastened with prayer flags. Stupas, prayer wheels, and chortens are also spread all over the trail.

Pay attention, and you will see how locals are well-connected to their roots and how strong their beliefs are.

How to get fit for the Everest Base Camp trek?

The Everest Base Camp trek requires 6 hours of walking on average each day, exposes you to high altitude, and requires good strength. So, you have to do workouts that will prepare you for these challenges.

  • Let's start with long walking hours and rugged terrain. For this, you need good stamina and core strength. Cardiovascular exercises such as running, swimming, cycling, jogging, and even simple long walks will help you.
  • To train for the high altitude exposure, you can go on a day hike near you. If there is no hiking trail around your city, you can look for training centers that have plans for high altitude.
  • Leg and back strength are crucial. You trek with a day pack weighing up to 5 kg. So, your legs and back have to be strong. For that, you can do strength training, focusing on calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, and core exercises.
  • Mental resilience is another important requirement of the Everest Base Camp trek. Trekking in extreme conditions pushes you out of your comfort zone and requires patience, a positive mindset, and willpower.

So, who can do the Everest Base Camp trek?...

Is the Everest Base Camp trek suitable for you?

  • Everest Base Camp trek is a beginner-friendly trek but requires proper training, preparation, and acclimatization. First-time trekkers will find the EBC trek challenging but manageable.
  • Likewise, experienced trekkers will enjoy the Everest Base Camp trek 14 days to the fullest. Previous trekking experience means you know uphill walking, may have some high altitude experience, and can push yourself.
  • There are no age restrictions for trekking to Everest Base Camp. If you are capable of hiking at high altitude, you can do this trek. However, underage trekkers (below age 16) must be accompanied by their parents or an identified guardian.

The Lukla flight: helpful information

  • Spring and autumn: Fly to Lukla from Ramechhap Airport. It takes 4 to 5 hours to drive from Thamel to reach this airport.
  • Summer/monsoon and winter: Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu Airport.

*Spring and autumn are peak travel seasons in Nepal, so thousands of travelers fly in and out of Kathmandu Airport every day, making it very busy. By shifting the Lukla flight to Ramechhap Airport, the authorities can avoid delays.

Upgrade to helicopter flights between Kathmandu and Lukla, or fly back to Kathmandu after the Kala Patthar excursion

If the standard Lukla flights are not your cup of tea or you are not confident about this flight, you can consider upgrading to a helicopter flight between Kathmandu and Lukla. It will cost USD 650 to USD 750 (one-way) per person.

Similarly, trekkers who want to give a grand ending to their Everest Base Camp trek 14 days or are too exhausted to walk down to Lukla, can take a helicopter flight from Gorak Shep to Kathmandu.

In fact, many trekkers are doing this- hiking to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar and returning to Kathmandu in a helicopter. It will save you around three days of walking.

Essential Information

Guide and porter for the Everest Base Camp trek

You can do the Everest Base Camp trek with or without a guide and porter. By purchasing our EBC trek package, you will get a local guide and a porter to accompany you. Their salary and insurance are already covered in our package cost. You only have to tip them.

Trekking with a guide ensures your safety and satisfaction. You will have smoother logistics and get closer insights into the villages, locals, and mountains.

Likewise, knowing that there is someone to take care of you, you will have peace of mind and can enjoy the trek to the fullest. Porters carry your duffel bag. It makes walking easier and safer on rugged terrain.

*One porter carries duffel bags of two trekkers. Each trekker has a 9 kg weight limit.

How much should you tip your guide and porter?

You can tip whatever amount you feel is okay. Generally, we recommend tipping 15% to 25% of the package cost. Tip your guide and porter based on your satisfaction level.

Accommodation during the Everest Base Camp trek

There are excellent choices of accommodation available on the Everest Base Camp trek route. From standard, basic lodges to upscale, luxury lodges, you can choose the accommodation as per your budget.

Our Everest Base Camp trek package includes standard lodges, but you can upgrade to luxury lodges as well. We provide our guests with the best lodges along the trail on a twin-share basis.

Single rooms cost a few extra bucks. Rooms in standard lodges are small and basic, but you will have a cozy space to spend the night and socialize with fellow trekkers. Private washrooms are very limited in the simple lodges.

So, make up your mind to use shared washrooms. Western-style toilets are available in many places, but you may have to use squat toilets in some villages. Showering is not common during the Everest Base Camp trek.

With the increase in elevation, the climate gets quite cold, and the water is freezing. Lodges offer free hot water to wash your face, but for a hot shower, you may have to pay extra money. Likewise, charging and WiFi are two other paid services. You will also have meals in the lodges.

*Expenses like hot showers, charging, bar bills, and WiFi are not covered in our Everest Base Camp trek package. Trekkers have to make these payments themselves, so they should carry some money for personal expenses.

What kind of food is available on the Everest Base Camp trek?

Food availability is also excellent on the Everest Base Camp trek. In villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, you will find many establishments selling many types of food, including freshly baked bakery items, pizza, steak, burgers, etc.

The famous food among trekkers is dal bhat and thukpa. These two dishes are found throughout the trail, and you will have them often. In addition to that, options such as porridge, soups, Tibetan bread, fried rice, stew, curry, momo, noodles, etc, are also available.

For breakfast, you will have options like oats, muesli, porridge, toast, eggs, sausages, fruits, chapati, tea, coffee, etc. Clean drinking water is also available everywhere.

*In Lukla and Namche Bazaar, you will have the most food options. These two villages also have cafes and pubs where you can have a variety of drinks and snacks.

*Our Everest Base Camp trek package includes three meals a day- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Trekkers have to pay for extra food and drinks.

Everest Base Camp trek difficulty

The Everest Base Camp trek difficulty is marked as moderate according to the Himalayan standards. However, depending on your fitness and past trekking experience, this trek can get challenging.

Regardless of the challenges, the EBC trek is also achievable for all ages and fitness levels of trekkers if they prepare well for it. Trekking to Everest Base Camp doesn't involve any technical climbing.

However, you will walk 6 hours a day on average following rugged terrain that gets steep in some sections. The physical and mental demands are high on the Everest Base Camp trek.

Walking long hours, high altitude, and being cut off from the digital world demands both physical and mental resilience. The Everest Base Camp trek is fun and adventurous, but you also have to be determined and serious.

Acclimatization and how to avoid altitude sickness

The moment you land at Lukla Airport (2,860 m), you will be above the high altitude threshold. So, we descend around 200 meters to Phakding village to lower the risk of altitude sickness.

*The chances of altitude sickness are high above 2,500 meters.

By the time you reach Namche Bazaar, you will be 3,440 meters above sea level. Sleeping above this elevation without an acclimatization break is too risky. So, we take a rest day in Namche Bazaar and hike to Hotel Everest View for acclimatization.

*Rest days or acclimatization days are built into the itinerary to provide trekkers time to adjust to the elevation. On rest days, you hike to a higher altitude and return to spend the night in the same village.

Likewise, we have another rest day in Dingboche village. From here, you will hike to Nangkartshang Peak. Some trekkers may have a hard time even after two rest days. So, we recommend following our advice below:

  • Altitude sickness can happen to anyone, regardless of their age and fitness. So, do not take it lightly just because you are fit or young.
  • While trekking, maintain a steady pace and ascend slowly.
  • Do not waste your energy by rushing. Be smart and keep a steady pace that will help you walk for 6 to 7 hours.
  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke, especially at the start of the journey. You have to keep your body in optimal conditions.
  • Maintain your body hydrated. Drink 2-3 liters of water daily and combine soups and ginger-honey teas in your meals.
  • Pay attention to your body. See how it feels as the elevation rises. If you feel sick or experience any discomfort, inform your guide and follow his advice.

Travel insurance for the Everest Base Camp trek

Travel insurance is a must for the Everest Base Camp trek. If you suffer from an elevated form of altitude sickness, get hurt/sick, or any emergency occurs, helicopter evacuation is the quickest way to bring you back to Kathmandu.

Helicopter evacuation expenses can get steep, so we recommend trekkers to buy travel insurance covering rescue up to 5,500 meters for the Everest Base Camp trek. It will be a great backup to rely on.

Everest Base Camp trek permit

Foreigners have to obtain permits to enter the Khumbu region to do the Everest Base Camp trek or any trek. The money collected from the permits is used to conserve, maintain, and upgrade the Khumbu region.

The Everest Base Camp trek requires two permits:

  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit
  • Sagarmatha National Park permit

*Trekkers do not have to worry about the permits. Both are covered in our package cost.

Best time to trek to Everest Base Camp

The common answer for the best time for the Everest Base Camp trek is the spring and autumn seasons.

These seasons have good weather and climate at high altitude. So, trekking to Everest Base Camp and other parts of the Khumbu region are safe and doable.

However, there are also downsides, like the trails are busy because 99% of trekkers do the EBC trek in spring or autumn. The lodges are overpacked, and the trails are not peaceful.

Therefore, the best time to trek to Everest Base Camp may differ from one trekker to another depending on their interests. But for stable weather and a pleasant climate, spring and autumn are perfect.

Spring (March-May)

The temperature in spring ranges from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) during the daytime. Likewise, at night the temperature may drop to -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F).

Good weather in spring leads to clear mountain views and a comfortable climate. The landscapes are extremely beautiful thanks to the flowers blooming all over the lower hills.

Summer/monsoon (June to August)

Summer and monsoon go together. Some days are super hot, and some see heavy rainfall. Trekking to Everest Base Camp is quite challenging in this season due to unfavorable weather.

The trail is slippery and muddy. Lukla flights are often delayed or canceled due to bad weather. And the mountain views may not be clear all the time.

The pro of summer/monsoon trekking is that you will discover rich vegetation and enjoy peaceful trails.

Autumn (September-November)

Autumn is the second-best time of the year to trek to Everest Base Camp. You will get stable weather, moderate climate, and great mountain views.

The temperature ranges from 12°C to 18°C (54°F to 64°F) during daytime and can drop to -10°C to 0°C (14°F to 32°F) at night.

Another major highlight of autumn is the Nepalese festivals. Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath, three major festivals, are celebrated between September and November.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is not a very popular time for the Everest Base Camp trek. However, if you love traveling during winter vacation, the EBC trek will be a great option.

The trekking route is peaceful, and the lodge's prices are low. The weather is not that stable, but also not crazy like the monsoon. Just have 1-2 contingency days, and you will be fine.

The main issue of winter trekking is cold, and it is also the major charm of this season. Snowfall makes the landscapes heavenly, and the mountain vistas are out of this world on a clear day.

Nepal travel visa

To enter Nepal, you will need to obtain a Nepal travel visa. It is readily available at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You can obtain it upon landing at the airport.

Alternatively, trekkers can visit the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate office in their country to get a Nepal travel visa. Either way, you need this document.

You can check more details of the Nepal travel visa on this site.

*Adventure Magic Treks is not responsible for the Nepal travel visa.

*Travelers from some countries are not eligible for an on-arrival Nepal travel visa, so we recommend checking details.
