We all want to do something epic at least once in our lives, and trekking to destinations like Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, and Gokyo Lakes is quite an epic venture.

Compared to our standard EBC trek, the Everest Base Camp Gokyo Lakes trek is technically advanced in some sections. Moreover, the EBC with Gokyo Lakes trek is also more adventurous and compelling.

Beginner trekkers with good fitness and proper preparation may do the Everest Base Camp trek with Gokyo Lakes 17 days, but previous trekking experience is recommended for a satisfying journey.

The most demanding section on the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes trek is the Cho La Pass crossing. It is a high-altitude mountain pass that connects the Gokyo Lakes with the Everest Base Camp route.

Many trekkers consider crossing this pass equal to climbing a 5,000-meter peak. But do not worry, Cho La Pass is not a peak, and you do not need a climbing permit.

You can also do only the Gokyo Lakes trek with us if you do not want to cross Cho La Pass or trek to EBC.

Overall, the Everest Base Camp trek with Gokyo Lakes certainly has some challenging sections, but the incredible views and a lifetime experience make up for all the difficult walking.

Everest Base Camp trek with Gokyo Lakes itinerary - summary

We have broken down our Everest Base Camp Gokyo Lakes trek itinerary below:

The start of the journey: hike to Namche Bazaar

You will begin the Everest Base Camp Gokyo Lakes trek with the famous Lukla flight. It will be a 30-35 minutes flight. The northern and eastern Himalayan ranges are visible during the flight.

From Lukla, you will begin trekking through rhododendron forests. The trail goes along the Dudh Koshi River and passes by Phakding and Namche Bazaar. You will cross many suspension bridges between Lukla and Namche Bazaar.

Trail separates to Gokyo Valley: hike to Gokyo Lakes

After Namche Bazaar, you will trek to Gokyo Valley, where the Gokyo Lakes are situated. It is a different, less crowded route, and the terrain is also offbeat.

Spend nights in settlements like Dole and Machhermo and traverse the Nogzumpa Glacier moraine on the way to Gokyo village. You will cross the 1st and 2nd Gokyo Lakes before reaching the Gokyo village, which is located near the 3rd Gokyo Lake.

You might be wondering how many Gokyo Lakes there are. Well, there are 19 Gokyo Lakes, but among them, 6 are considered the main Gokyo Lakes. Gokyo village is a beautiful Sherpa village.

Secluded by the main route that the majority of trekkers follow in the Khumbu region, the Gokyo village offers a peaceful retreat. From Gokyo Village, you will hike to Gokyo Ri and the 4th and 5th Gokyo Lakes.

Some trekkers also hike to the 6th Gokyo Lake, which is situated near Mt. Cho Oyu Base Camp. In Gokyo Village, you will spend two days and one night and descend to Thagnak.

The Cho La Pass route: cross the pass

Then, the trail ascends to Cho La Pass and descends to Dzongla for the night. It will be a long hiking day (almost 10 hours). From the top of the Cho La Pass, you will witness one of the most outstanding mountain panoramas on the whole trip.

Rejoin the EBC route: hike to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar

Dzongla onwards, you will descend to Lobuche village, rejoining the EBC route. Now, you will trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar via Gorak Shep.

Gorak Shep is the middle ground for the EBC and Kala Patthar hike. You can hike to both these places from here.

Return trek to Lukla:

After the Kala Patthar hike, you will follow the same trail back to Lobuch village and trek to Dingboche via Dughla. Leaving Dingboche, you will descend through terraced fields and reach Pangboche village.

Trekking through lush hills descends to Deboche and then to Tengboche village. Further, the trail descends to Namche Bazaar and retraces the trail back to Lukla.

Take it as a way to thank them for their hard work and companionship during the trek, and also a way to motivate them to provide the best service to other trekkers.

We let our guests tip as per their wish. So, our Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes trek package does not include the tips. Each trekker of the group can contribute 15% to 25% of the package and collectively tip their guide and porter.

  • Limited services: Once you leave the main EBC trail, the services will be limited. Not all parts of the Khumbu region are well-established like the EBC trail. So, you have to adjust to limited facilities and a remote mountain lifestyle for the trekking duration.
