Have you ever wondered what other places in the Khumbu region you can trek to apart from Everest Base Camp? Well, one of them is Gokyo Lakes. These are the world's highest freshwater lake systems, and trekking here is not more challenging than the EBC trek. In fact, from Lukla, you can reach the Gokyo village in less time than the EBC.

The Gokyo Lakes trek is a famous alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek in the Khumbu region. This trek takes you northwest of the EBC trail into a much more pristine and untouched area.

You will start the journey with the Lukla flight and follow the same trail till Namche Bazaar. After Namche Bazaar, the Gokyo Lakes trek route splits and follows an offbeat, less-crowded path to Gokyo Valley.

Many Gokyo Lakes trek itineraries combine Cho La Pass excursions, but we have kept ours straightforward with no mountain pass crossing. It has made our Gokyo Lakes trek achievable for even beginner trekkers who are in good shape.

On the Gokyo Lakes trek 12 days, you will see four of the world's top 14 peaks that are above 8,000 meters - Everest (8,849 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), and Makalu (8,481 m). Likewise, you will also see the longest glacier in Nepal, the Ngozumpa glacier, along the Gokyo Lakes trail.

The main scenery unfolds when you enter the Gokyo Valley, and the Gokyo Lakes begin to unfold one after another. There are six main Gokyo Lakes situated between 4,700 meters and 5,000 meters. The most iconic mountain panorama you will see is from Gokyo Ri.

Gokyo Lakes trek length and terrain

The Gokyo Lakes trek route is well-established. The trek distance is approximately 85 to 90 kilometers, combining the side hikes. Likewise, you will walk on rugged, steep, and offbeat terrain on this trek.

The trail ascends and descends mostly. Flat paths are fewer. Sharp ascents are fewer. As you ascend higher, the terrain will get uneven. Trekking poles will help you a lot to maintain balance and stay safe on rugged terrain.

Gokyo Lakes trek difficulty

The Gokyo Lakes trek difficulty is moderate. We have not included Cho La Pass in this itinerary, which makes it ideal for beginner trekkers as well. There is no technical climbing on this trek.

Some of the challenging sections on the Gokyo Lakes trek route are the final few hundred meters climb to Namche Bazaar because the trail is steep. Likewise, Namche Bazaar to Dole includes steep climbing through forests.

The Dole to Machhermo has a gradual ascent, but also passes by a landslide area. As you ascend from Macchermo to Gokyo, high altitude and thin air make walking challenging. Finally, the Gokyo Ri hike includes a steep climb.

If you are fit, you can complete the Gokyo Lakes trek. It is not a strenuous trek but demands good preparation. You can also do this trek without previous trekking experience.

Trekking duration and daily walking hours

Our Gokyo Lakes trek is 12 days long. You will trek for 9 days in those 12 days. Every day, you will walk around for 5 to 7 hours. Maintaining your pace is the key to walking long hours.

Altitude sickness and how to avoid it

Altitude sickness is a big challenge on the Gokyo Lakes trek. This trek takes you above 5,000 meters above sea level. The highest point is Gokyo Ri, standing at 5,400 meters (17,814 ft).

With the rise in elevation, the oxygen level drops. It makes trekking challenging and increases the risk of altitude sickness. So, trekkers must take care of them and follow preventive measures to avoid altitude sickness.

  • Altitude sickness happens when you gain rapid elevation and your body is not used to it. So, we only ascend 500 meters a day during the Gokyo Lakes trek.
  • By maintaining your pace and ascending slowly, you will increase the chance of acclimatization.
  • In addition to that, keep yourself hydrated. Drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day and avoid smoking or drinking alcohol. Hydration plays a huge role in acclimatization.
  • Our Gokyo Lakes trek itinerary includes an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar. You will be at 3,440 meters at Namche Bazaar, so a rest day in this village is crucial before hiking higher.
  • Finally, have ample food and get enough sleep each day to perform best on the trail. You have to be in good condition to walk 6 hours a day in the Himalayas.

Gokyo Lakes trek travel insurance

Travel insurance is a must for the Gokyo Lakes trek. It should cover emergency helicopter evacuation up to 5,500 meters. Likewise, you are also recommended to include medical bills in your travel insurance.

Buying travel insurance in your country will be best. Send us your insurance copy once you get it. We may use it to acquire Gokyo Lakes trek permits in advance on your behalf.

*We do not allow trekking to Gokyo Lakes without travel insurance that covers helicopter rescue.

The Gokyo Lakes are located in the Khumbu region in Sagarmatha National Park. So, you will need the same permit as the EBC trek. Our Gokyo Lakes trek package comes with permits, and our team will obtain them on your behalf.

You will need the Sagarmatha National Park permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipal permit. These permits cost around USD 30 and USD 20 per person, respectively.

Best time to do the Gokyo Lakes trek

The best time to do the Gokyo Lakes trek is in the spring and autumn seasons. These seasons have favorable weather conditions. The Lukla flights are on time, and the weather is mostly stable.

Likewise, the climate remains moderate in spring and autumn, and the scenery is breathtaking. You will see clear mountain views almost every day. As these are transitional seasons, there could be occasional rainfall, but it will not affect your trek.

The temperature ranges between 10°C and 20°C. The nights and mornings can get colder, and the temperature can drop to 5°C. Nevertheless, you will have comfortable weather and climate in spring and autumn for trekking.

Offseason trekking

Winter (December to February) and summer/monsoon (June to August) are known as the offseasons for trekking.

Gokyo Lakes trek in winter

Winter may not be a peak trekking season, but if you are seeking peaceful trails, then it is the perfect time of the year to trek. The main issue with winter trekking is the cold, but if you are well-prepared, it will not be that challenging.

You will get accommodation and food along the trail and a cozy space to spend the nights, and you can explore in the daytime. The winter landscapes are also mesmerizing.

The Gokyo Lakes froze when the peak cold climate hit. It opens the gate for ice skating on Gokyo Lakes. Trekking in the winter can be a very unique and mesmerizing experience.

Summer/monsoon

Summer and monsoon coincide. It is a very hot, humid, and wet period. The lower parts of the Gokyo Lakes trek route are highly affected due to monsoon rain. The trails are slippery and muddy, and landslide risks increase.

You have to be very careful while trekking in the monsoon season. Likewise, the monsoon weather highly affects Lukla flights, increasing delays and cancellations. It is important that you have contingency days and backup money planned.

Communication during the trek

The mobile and WiF network is so-so till Namche Bazaar. From here onwards, the signal only declines. In lodges, you can buy WiFi service for a few bucks, but the internet speed will not be good or reliable.

Charging and hot showers

Charging and hot showers are available everywhere at an additional price. Pack power banks and extra batteries for backup. Likewise, taking a hot shower can cost you up to Nrs 700 per shower. Still, it is not easy to take a shower at a high altitude because of the cold. So, pack wet tissues to wipe your body daily.

Nepal travel visa

A Nepal travel visa is not included in our Gokyo Lakes trek package. Trekkers have to obtain it by themselves. You can apply for a Nepal travel visa at the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate Office in your country.
