The Mount Kailash Tour represents a significant pilgrimage for Hindus, aimed at exploring the majestic Mount Kailash and the arid Himalayan region of Tibet. This journey commences in Kathmandu, leading travelers on an overland expedition to the pristine Lake Manasarovar and the sacred Mount Kailash, both situated in the remote western part of the Tibetan Himalayas. The tour not only showcases breathtaking natural landscapes but also provides insights into Tibetan Buddhist culture and opportunities to engage with the local Tibetan populace.

Nestled in the far western region of the Tibetan Plateau, Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar stand as two remarkable destinations for tourists. Accessing Mount Kailash requires a four-day continuous drive from Kathmandu across the expansive Tibetan plateau, or alternatively, a week-long trek from Simikot in western Nepal. Upon completing the four-day journey, visitors are greeted by the stunning sight of a turquoise lake adorned with floating swans, with the magnificent Mount Kailash in close proximity. For Hindus, Mount Kailash is revered as the dwelling place of Lord Shiva, while both Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash hold profound religious significance for Hindus and Buddhists alike. Additionally, four major Asian rivers—the Indus, Karnali, Brahmaputra, and Sutlej—originate from Lake Manasarovar.

Helpful Info

Important Note for Kailash Tour:

It is prohibited to bring any books, magazines, or images related to Tibet, as well as any literature on Buddhism or materials concerning Lamas, during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, as Chinese customs do not permit the entry of such items. Additionally, capturing photographs or videos in areas governed by Chinese customs, the military, or police stations is strictly forbidden.

Food and Lodging During the Kailash Mansarovar Journey:

The food and lodging arrangements during the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage are quite straightforward. The majority of meals served are vegetarian, featuring staples such as rice, lentils (dal), vegetables, chapatis (flatbread), and occasionally local dairy items like paneer (cottage cheese) and yogurt. While the offerings may not be elaborate, they are wholesome and sufficient to sustain travelers.

During the trekking portion, food choices may be somewhat restricted, making it advisable to carry personal snacks such as energy bars, dried fruits, and instant soups. Along the trekking route, small teahouses and tented eateries provide convenient options for quick meals, including instant noodles, packet soups, and beverages like tea or coffee.

These establishments are typically located at strategic points, such as between Qugu Temple and Derapuk or between Derapuk and Juthulpuk Monasteries. Regarding accommodations, the quality varies by location, featuring a combination of basic guesthouses and somewhat more comfortable hotels in Darchen. As the starting point for the Kailash trek, Darchen offers the most pleasant lodging options, including 3-4 star hotels equipped with private bathrooms and electric blankets for colder nights. Room types include standard, double, and suite configurations.

As the trek progresses over the three days around Mount Kailash, the accommodations become increasingly rudimentary. The first night is generally spent at a guesthouse near Derapuk Monastery, where guests share dormitory-style rooms with three to four individuals. While warm blankets are provided, amenities such as air conditioning and private bathrooms are not available, and showers are not offered.

Passport Copy: A clear copy of your passport must be submitted at least 20 days prior to the commencement of the Tibet Travel Permit processing.

Original Passport: It is essential to have your original passport with you upon your group's arrival in Kathmandu.

Passport Size Photo: A passport-sized photograph with a white background, showing your front face without eyeglasses and a neutral expression is required.

Visa Application Form: Please complete the visa application form prior to your arrival.

Financial Considerations for the Kailash Tour :

Given the remote nature of the region and the limited availability of banking services, reliance on digital payment methods such as international debit cards, UPI, and ATM cards may prove to be unreliable. Therefore, it is crucial to carry cash for various expenses, including accommodation, meals, and souvenirs.

It is advisable to have three types of currency available: the Nepalese Rupee (NPR), Chinese Yuan (CNY), and US Dollars (USD). The Nepalese Rupee will be necessary for your stay in Nepal, particularly in Kathmandu and along the Nepal-Tibet border. In a similar vein, the Chinese Yuan serves as the primary currency in Tibet and throughout China.

Currency exchange facilities in Kathmandu or at the Nepal-Tibet border can provide you with Chinese Yuan, which will be essential for most transactions in Tibet. US Dollars are also widely accepted during the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage, especially by tour operators and certain vendors. Therefore, ensure that you have an adequate amount of cash on hand.
