The Upper Mustang trek is a world apart from most treks in Nepal. It is an incredible journey in the upper northern reaches of the Himalayas. Instead of lush valleys and rhododendron hills, you will trek through windy high cliffs and deep canyons.

Whatever you know about trekking regions in Nepal, forget all of them. The Upper Mustang trek is nothing like the famous Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, or Langtang Valley treks.

It is an adventurous, offbeat backpacking trip in a remote trans-Himalayan region, close to the Tibetan border. There are only a few places on Earth where ancient Tibetan Buddhism is still thriving, and Upper Mustang is one of those places.

Unchanged by time and unhinged by modernization, the Upper Mustang trek takes you back in time. You will explore medieval villages, centuries-old monasteries, and the lifestyle of nomadic herders.

This trek is physically and mentally demanding, but the landscapes and mountain views you will see will leave you speechless. From the outside, the region will make you think- how is life possible here?

However, as one village after another unfolds, you will see the unique but very content lives of the locals. Upper Mustang- a place where companionship, community, trust, and deep-rooted traditions prevail.

Overall, the Upper Mustang trek is not just another journey in the Himalayas, but a passage through time. Every step will uncover the raw natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. In fact, you will see unbelievable Sky Caves, where humans once resided.

Why do the Upper Mustang trek 17 days?

There are many reasons that make the Upper Mustang trek one of the greatest treks in Nepal. It is the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal.

*After the abolition of the monarchy in Nepal in 2008, Upper Mustang continued to practice it. They have their own king and regional controls, which leads to the title "the last forbidden kingdom".

Even when foreigners were exploring different sections of the Himalayas in Nepal and conquering one mountain after another, the Upper Mustang remained off-limits till 1992 AD.

And when the region was opened to the world, traveling here became one of the greatest expeditions for adventurers, like exploring a lost world from a fictional book, full of mysteries and magic.

Given the high archaeological and cultural values and the open border with Tibet, the Upper Mustang was introduced as a restricted area with an expensive permit and strict travel rules for foreigners.

It allowed the Nepalese government to control the flow of tourists and preserve the glory of the region. The mysticism and the beauty of Upper Mustang have attracted not only travelers but also filmmakers and writers.

You can see many films, documentaries, and books on Upper Mustang. Some were even nominated for an Oscar Award. So, when we talk about Upper Mustang or trekking here, we talk about privilege, legacy, and hallmark.

Essential Information

Upper Mustang trek permits

You will need the following permits for the Upper Mustang trek:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit (ACAP)
  • Upper Mustang RAP (Restricted Area Permit)

Our Upper Mustang trek package is inclusive of both permits, so trekkers do not have to pay extra money.

Upper Mustang trek best time

The best time to do the Upper Mustang trek is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). Likewise, this trek is also possible during the summer/monsoon (June-August) because it is a rainshadow area.

Spring and autumn have good weather and climate. There is less chance of rainfall, and mountain views are also excellent. In the summer/monsoon, the trip will be affected till Kagebni.

Once you enter Upper Mustang, rain doesn't fall that much. So, the trails are dry and safe. You can also trek to Lo Manthang in winter, but note that the region gets very cold.

Upper Mustang trek difficulty

The Upper Mustang trek is an offbeat trek. Its difficulty level is marked as challenging. This trek includes crossing several mountain passes under 4,000 meters, along with high altitude, dry climate, and many steep sections.

You will ascend and descend for long hours daily. So, trekkers have to be fit to do the Upper Mustang trek. We also recommend having previous trek or high-altitude experience.

The high-risk zones on the Upper Mustang trek route are:

  • Steep climbs from Chele: There are many steep climbs after Chele. As you enter a high-altitude zone, the trail becomes tricky to navigate.
  • Syanbochen: From Syanbochen, the risks of altitude sickness increase because you are above 3,000 meters. It is crucial that you maintain your pace and ascend slowly from here onwards.
  • Nyi La Pass: Crossing Nyi La Pass is the toughest among all passes on the Upper Mustang trek route due to exposed ridges and strong winds.
  • Ghar Gompa route: The trail between Lo Manthang and Ghar Gompa is isolated and steep.
  • Dhakmar: As you descend from Ghar Gompa to Ghiling, you will trek through Dhakmar. This part of the trail has a high erosion chance, especially in the monsoon.

Upper Mustang trek distance

The Upper Mustang trek distance is approximately 125 km to 130 km.

Altitude sickness during the Upper Mustang trek

The Upper Mustang trek is not as high as the EBC trek or the Annapurna Circuit trek. But you will ascend over 2,500 meters, so the risk of altitude sickness remains.

If you stay a little proactive and follow our altitude sickness tips, you can complete this trek without any worries. The top advice is to ascend slowly and maintain your pace.

Likewise, our Upper Mustang trek itinerary also maintains a maximum 500-meter ascent each day. In addition to that, crossing mountain passes ensures you ascend high and sleep low, which is beneficial for acclimatization.

Altitude sickness tips:

  • To prevent altitude sickness during the Upper Mustang trek, you have to drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day. In short, you have to stay hydrated.
  • Rushing is not recommended. Maintain a steady pace and ascend slowly.
  • Spend ample time resting and recovering each day.
  • Have big lunches that include pasta or rice for maximum energy.
  • Carry snacks and electrolytes for a quick energy boost while hiking.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking.
  • Listen to your body. If it needs rest, stop for a bit. If you feel sick or experience any discomfort, take care of it. Do not ignore the signs.

Upper Mustang trek accommodation

The Upper Mustang trek route has tea houses. Rooms are basic with twin beds, simple bedding, and no heating system. However, you will get blankets.

As it gets quite cold at night, blankets will not be enough, so we recommend a sleeping bag for this trek. Likewise, in bigger villages, single rooms are available.

There are no charging ports in the rooms. Trekkers have to pay a few bucks to access charging ports, that is usually around the reception area. Likewise, most toilets on the Upper Mustang trek route are squat.

Western-style toilets are available in some lodges. Hot showers cost NPR 300 to NPR 500 per use. We advise trekkers to pack toilet paper, hand sanitizer, wet tissues, and a power bank.

Food and drinking water on the Upper Mustang trek

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will get breakfast in your hotel rooms. You have to buy lunch and dinner by yourself. During trekking, we provide three meals a day with tea/coffee.

Food options on the Upper Mustang trek route are decent. Western dishes are limited, but you will find many Nepali and Tibetan options.

For example, you will eat a lot of dal bhat, fried rice, thukpa, and noodles. Soups, porridge, stew, Tibetan bread, paratha, and pasta are also available throughout the trail.

Options are extensive in villages at lower elevations, such as Jomsom and Kagbeni, compared to villages at higher elevations. Likewise, you will drink boiled water during the trek. Pack snacks and drinks for the journey.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance covering emergency helicopter evacuation and medical bills is mandatory for the Upper Mustang trek. You cannot join us on this trek without travel insurance. Make sure the evacuation is applicable to trekking in Nepal.
