The Upper Dolpo trek is an exhilarating and challenging voyage. The region is not easily accessible, and trekking here is expensive. This has kept tourists away and preserved the way of life.

Locals here still live their ancient lifestyle. You will feel like you are traveling back in time, as no modern technologies or amenities exist. If you are in search of a true, untouched trekking region in Nepal, Upper Dolpo is your answer.

The trail does not even have tea houses, and there is no network. Trekkers have to be self-sufficient for the Upper Dolpo trekking and carry all essentials such as food, tents, fuel, etc.

Similarly, Upper Dolpo is an offbeat trek. The terrain is quite demanding. You will walk on rugged, steep slopes, vast meadows, and rocky gorges, and cross three mountain passes: Kang La, Saldang La, and Jeng La.

Throughout the Upper Dolpo trek, you will ascend above 5,000 meters multiple times and spend many nights above 3,500 meters. The trek is adventurous, exciting, and intriguing, but all these adventures come at a cost of challenging hiking.

Overall, if you want to do the Upper Dolpo trek 26 days, you have to be physically and mentally fit. This once-in-a-lifetime expedition tests your endurance and pushes your limits. Nevertheless, you will be rewarded with breathtaking scenery and incredible mountain panoramas for all the challenges.

What to expect during the Upper Dolpo trekking?

The Upper Dolpo trek is a long journey. It is a 26-day trip to Nepal, and you will spend more than 20 days trekking. Every day starts with our team preparing breakfast and lunch for you. You will have breakfast before starting walking and lunch on the way.

The crew will set up tents at our camping sites and prepare meals. You will focus on enjoying nature, walking, and the views. It is less likely that you will encounter other fellow trekkers, but occasional interactions with locals will keep the journey compelling.

No sound of vehicles or the city will allow you to hear the sounds of nature. Phoksundo River's gushing melody along the trail, the chirping of birds, and the whistles of the hills are all you hear.

You will have simple meals and good times with your group and yourself. There is nothing to worry about. Just live each moment. This is what you can expect during the Upper Dolpo trek 26 days.

The Upper Dolpo trek attractions

The Upper Dolpo area is little known and less explored. You cannot predict what will come next, and every moment will humble you.

Beyond the famous Langtang, Everest, Annapurna, and Manaslu regions, Upper Dolpo is a gem packed with hidden monasteries, old salt trade routes, snow leopard tracks, and stone-walled villages.

The air is thin yet youthful and motivating. Mountains such as Kanjiroba Himal, Kagmara Himal, Crystal Mountain, Dhaulagiri, Putha Hiunchuli, Churen Himal, and many others are seen along the trail.

Many peaks do not even have names. Locals estimate seasons by ripening crops and the arrival of the first snow. Even though Upper Dolpo is a camping trek, you will get to indulge in apple pies, stew, and a few other local delicacies in some villages.

Shey-Phoksundo National Park's biodiversity, Phoksundo Lake, and Shey Gompa are some major attractions of Upper Dolpo. The icy blue color of Phoksundo Lake, surrounded by hills, snow-capped mountains, and alpine greenery, makes it a picture-book scenery.

Likewise, you will also see BonPo and Tibetan Buddhism religion and practices. You should also know that Upper Dolpo is home to rare wildlife such as snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, Himalayan blue sheep, tahr, etc.

Coming across wildlife during the trek is rare, but you may catch their glimpse if you are lucky. If you want to learn about life in Upper Dolpo before you start trekking, we highly recommend you watch the film "Himalaya" or read "The Snow Leopard".

Is this trek suitable for you?

Upper Dolpo is a tough trek. Ask yourself, are you ready to spend more than 20 days in the mountains without any facilities, a network, or fast food?

Does your holiday allow you to spend 26 days traveling in Nepal? Do you have enough budget to enjoy this trek? Are you physically and mentally fit?

If your answer is yes, book the trek right away. We suggest you keep 6 to 8 weeks on hand for preparations. We also recommend doing this trek in a group of 4 to 8 trekkers.

You will have a better experience, less money burden, and superb companionship. If you love tranquility and don't mind human absence, the Upper Dolpo trek is one of the finest treks in Nepal.

How do you prepare for the Upper Dolpo trek in Nepal?

You have to be in your best condition to enjoy the Upper Dolpo trek. If you have made up your mind to do this trek, we recommend starting to work out early. The better your physical condition, the more you will enjoy this trek.

  • Cardio: Cardio should be your main focus. Get physically active as much as you can. Incorporate regular swimming, cycling, running, or jogging into your daily routine. You can do one of these activities or multiple of them as per your wish.
  • Strength: Walking 6 hours a day uphill requires a lot of strength. You will also be carrying a backpack. So, you have to be strong. Train your core, legs, and upper body. You can do strength training in a gym or at home.
  • Walking and day hikes: Go on regular long walks with a backpack weighing 5 kg. Day hikes are the best way to experience some altitude gain and uphill/downhill walking.
  • Stretches and breathing practice: Stretching will help relieve body pain. We recommend making a habit of stretching your body and following the same route before starting trekking and at the end of the day, while in the mountains. Likewise, practice long breathing. It will help you calm down.

Essential Information

Upper Dolpo trek difficulty

The Upper Dolpo trek is challenging in many ways. It is an offbeat trek with many steep slopes and narrow tracks. The region itself is very remote from the rest of Nepal and also not connected.

You will be experiencing true Himalayan remoteness on this trek. Likewise, there is also the risk of altitude sickness because you travel above 5,000 meters during the trek. Not to mention, it is a camping trek, so you have to be self-sufficient.

All these factors add up to the Upper Dolpo trek challenges and make it quite demanding for trekkers. We recommend the Upper Dolpo trek to experienced trekkers with good physical and mental fitness.

  • Daily walking hours: On average, you will walk 5 to 6 hours a day. However, on days you will cross mountain passes, up to 8 hours of walking are required.
  • Tourist infrastructure: None

Altitude Sickness and how to avoid it during the Upper Dolpo trekking

The Upper Dolpo trek is a high-altitude adventure. You will trek up to 5,350 meters above sea level on this trek and spend many nights above 4,000 meters.

If you are not used to this kind of elevation, then you may suffer from altitude sickness during this trek. The only way to avoid altitude sickness is acclimatization.

So, we have crafted our Upper Dolpo trek itinerary incorporating three acclimatization days. These rest days will help you acclimatize and recover from exhaustion, which decreases the risk of altitude sickness.

Altitude sickness is easy to avoid if you understand it. It mainly happens when humans travel to high altitude quickly without previous high altitude experience.

The altitude sickness chance increases above 2,500 meters. So, you have to be extra careful after this elevation and follow the tips below:

  • Ascend slowly and keep a steady pace while trekking.
  • You do not have to match anyone's speed. Walk at your own pace and save your energy.
  • Keep yourself hydrated while trekking. Carry a water bladder. It makes drinking water convenient while hiking.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks while ascending.
  • Get ample rest and eat carbohydrate-rich meals such as dal bha and noodles.
  • Listen to your body and be aware of the early signs of altitude sickness, which are vomiting, headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, breathlessness, and insomnia.

Travel Insurance for Upper Dolpo trek

Travel insurance is mandatory for the Upper Dolpo trek. It must cover emergency evacuation up to 5,500 meters and medical bills.

We recommend trekkers to buy travel insurance in their country and bring documents with them.

We need travel insurance to obtain restricted area permits. So, get your insurance early and share a copy of the document with us.

Upper Dolpo trek permits

For the Upper Dolpo trek, two permits are required. It is a restricted area in Nepal, so a restricted area permit for Upper Dolpo is needed. Likewise, you will also need a Shey-Phoksundo National Park permit. Our Upper Dolpo trek cost includes fees for both permits.

Shey-Phoksundo National Park permit cost: USD 30 per person

Upper Dolpo Restricted Area permit cost:

  • USD 500 per person for the first 10 days
  • USD 50 per person per day for additional days
  • USD 40 for two entry permits to Lower Dolpo (essential for travel to Upper Dolpo)

The best time to trek to Upper Dolpo

Apart from December to February, you can enjoy the Upper Dolpo trek throughout the year. Winter is the coldest time of the year. The region gets covered with snow, and the temperature goes below -20°C.

This makes trekking very demanding. Even the locals descend to lower altitudes to spend the winter. So, if you are planning to do the Upper Dolpo trek during the cold season, make sure you are well-prepared.

March to November are the best times to go trekking in Upper Dolpo. You may come across a few rainfalls while traveling to Upper Dolpo between June and August. However, once you enter the upper part of the region, there is no trace of rain.

Upper Dolpo is a rainshadow area, so there is no rainfall in the monsoon season. However, the climate can get quite hot while walking. Similarly, March to May and September to November are the perfect times to do this trek.

The weather and climate are ideal in these months. You will enjoy stunning mountain views and seasonal greenery. Likewise, if you plan your trek at the right time, you may also get to see Nepali festivals.

Accommodation & food during the Upper Dolpo trek

The Upper Dolpo trek is a camping trek. The package includes tents and all essential supplies for the journey. Our crew will handle setting up the tents at all-night stops. We provide quality alpine-standard tents.

Every trekker gets a single sleeping tent, and there will be shared dining and washroom tents as needed. You have to carry a nice sleeping bag and all personal essentials, such as toothpaste and brush, toilet paper, moisturizer, SPF, lip balm, etc.

Likewise, our crew will also prepare three meals a day for you during the trek. We will select the dishes before the trek starts, considering your allergies. Our menu will have good options.

We will have thukpa, noodle soups, dal bhat, burgers, pasta, eggs, pancakes, curries, fried rice, etc. You will also get tea and coffee every day.

We will drink boiled water during trekking and use a water purification tablet to treat water if needed. Buy enough snacks and bars for the trek.

Communication during the Upper Dolpo trek

The Upper Dolpo is a very remote area, and there is literally no mobile network. The higher you go, the remote the region will get, and you will have no access to WiFi or mobile network.

Trekkers should understand that the Upper Dolpo trek is an off-grid trek. So, you should pre-inform your family and let them know your trek schedule. Likewise, share our contact details for emergency communication.

Your group leader (guide) will carry a satellite phone with him during the trek to stay connected with the office team.

Charging and hot shower facilities

There will be limited access to electricity on the Upper Dolpo trek, so we highly recommend trekkers pack extra batteries and a solar power bank or charger.

Taking a shower is not easy, especially at high altitude, even if the water is hot. Usually, hot water for a shower comes at an extra cost, like a charging service. For backup, trekkers should pack wet wipes packets.

Trekking to Upper Dolpo with a guide and a porter

Trekking with a guide is compulsory for the Upper Dolpo trek because of its restricted area status.

Our Upper Dolpo trek package is inclusive of both guide and porter. You will trek with locals, so get ready to learn many things about Upper Dolpo and the locals.

It is the norm to tip your guide and porter after the trek. It is a camping trek, so you also have to tip other support staff, such as the chef, at the end of the trek.

It is best to budget the tip ahead of time and carry the money with you to tip your on-field crew. You can tip as much money as you wish. Each trekker should tip at least 15% to 25% of the package cost.

Nepal travel visa and currency

A Nepal travel visa is not included in our Upper Dolpo trek package. Trekkers have to obtain it by themselves. Nepal offers an on-arrival travel visa to travelers from most countries (except a few and refugee document holders).

Kindly check the on-arrival travel visa eligibility and other information on the official site of the Nepal government.

Likewise, you have to use Nepali currency while traveling in Nepal. Carry US Dollars for a quick exchange service at a bank or money exchange center. Similarly, you can withdraw money from most ATMs using your international card.

*There can be a small international transaction service fee charged by your bank. So, kindly learn about it.

Are there any health and safety concerns for the Upper Dolpo trek?

Upper Dolpo is a very remote, untouched, and unbothered part of the Himalayas in Nepal. There are no tea houses or tea shops along the trail. You will rarely come across locals in any part of the trail.
