What is it like doing the Manaslu Circuit trek 15 days?

The Manaslu Circuit trek is not like the popular Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit treks. It is one of the extremely isolated and less explored trekking routes in the Himalayas.

During the first few days of walking, you will pass through lowlands with rice and millet terraces. The trail gradually ascends above the Budhi Gandaki gorge and takes you to the alpine zone.

You will see stunning waterfalls while trekking and cross several hanging suspension bridges. Every day, the elevation will rise around 500 meters, and the landscape will change.

Mountain vistas along the trail are breathtaking. You will see Mt. Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Himlung Himal, Gyaji Kang, Kang Guru, etc. Likewise, the upper parts of the trail also offer views of glaciers.

The Manaslu Circuit terrain is offbeat. There will be many ascents and descents throughout the trek. Ascending Larkya La Pass is the most challenging. You will traverse glacier moraines and unclear, narrow tracks.

At the same time, Larkya La Pass is also the climax of the Manaslu Circuit trek 15 days. The mountain panorama from here is unbelievable. After Larkya La, you will descend to Bimthang and trek to Dharapani.

As you descend from Bimthang to Dharapani, you will enter the Annapurna region. Dharapani is one of the first villages you will explore during the Annapurna Circuit trek.

Some trekkers also choose to combine the Manaslu Circuit trek with the Annapurna Circuit trek for an ultimate trekking adventure.

The Nubri community of the Upper Mannaslu Circuit

The Nubri community is an indigenous Nepali group. Like Sherpas, they are natives of the Manalsu region. The Nubri Valley begins after Ghap village (on the way from Jagat to Namrung).

The local language is also known as Nubri. As per the records, it is one of the unheard, undocumented, and undiscovered languages in the world, and research is still going on.

The hidden Tsum Valley

Tsum Valley is situated northeast of Manaslu Circuit. The trail diverts from Lokpa village (on the way from Jagat to Deng). Tsum Valley is known as a hidden valley. It is more isolated, untouched, and less explored by tourists than the Manaslu Circuit.

You will hike to Mu Gompa and can also explore the Ganesh Himal Base Camp while trekking in Tsum Valley. Many trekkers prefer to do the Manaslu Circuit trek with Tsum Valley.

Is the Manaslu Circuit trek suitable for you?

The Manaslu Circuit trek is an extremely adventurous trek in Nepal. It is also a challenging trek and demands previous trekking experience. To do the Manaslu Circuit trek, you have to be in good shape.

So, anyone planning to do this trek must consider their fitness. The Manaslu Circuit trek is satisfying in all ways. You will enjoy the typical mountain lifestyle and the warm hospitality of the Nepali people.

The mountainous terrain will test your limits but also reward you with incredible views. The journey is not easy in terms of terrain, walking duration, high altitude, and limited facilities, but the wilderness, peace, and nature will fuel your determination.

Likewise, you have to be fine with getting uncomfortable on the Manaslu Circuit trek 15 days. If you have done the Everest Base Camp trek or know about this trek, you must have an idea of how well the trekking infrastructure is on this trek route.

Well, that's not the case with the Manaslu Circuit. You will have access to comfortable rooms, but the services are not even half close to what is available on the EBC route. Therefore, your determination, mindset, fitness, and endurance matter a lot when it comes to the Manaslu Circuit trek.

Do you think you can complete the Manaslu Circuit trek despite its challenges and demands? If yes, then we are here to help you streamline the trip.

Charging, hot shower, internet, and toilet during the Manaslu Circuit trek

Charging, hot showers, and WiFi cost extra money in the tea houses. These services may cost you Nrs 100 to Nrs 700. A hot shower usually costs between Nrs 500 and Nrs 700.

These are your personal expenses. Therefore, not covered by our Manaslu Circuit trek package. Make sure to budget a daily allowance for the trek.

  • Charging: Charging areas are separately made in the tea houses. All trekkers charge their devices there. Carry backup like a solar power bank and spare batteries.
  • WiFi: WiFi is available in many villages, but the network is not good. Alternatively, you can carry a Nepali SIM (NTC) to use data on the trail. Note that the mobile network is also patchy and not available in many sections of the trail.
  • Hot shower: You can get a hot shower service in many villages. Due to the cold climate at higher altitudes, taking a shower is challenging even if the water is hot. So, we recommend alternating the shower days and using wet wipes to keep themselves fresh.
  • Toilets: Some tea houses have Western-style toilets, but you also have to use squat toilets in a handful of places. In between the trails, you can use the washroom during lunch. The most useful advice is to carry toilet paper, soap, and sanitizer with you. Also, carry them in your daypack just in case you have to use them while hiking.

How do you prepare for the Manaslu Circuit trek?

Preparation for any trek highly depends on the trek's difficulty and your current fitness. In the case of the Manaslu Circuit trek, you have to be physically strong. Along with that, this trek also requires previous trek experience.

  • Core strength: Weight training will help you strengthen your core. Train your back, legs, and shoulders. It will help you a lot during the trek.
  • Long walking duration: Around 6 hours of daily walking is required during the Manaslu Circuit trek. So, if you are not used to long walks, start walking and increase the duration slowly.
  • Stamina: Imagine constantly walking uphill and downhill with poor stamina. You will not enjoy the trek, and the journey will become very challenging. Therefore, build your stamina. For that, cardiovascular exercises such as swimming, running, and cycling are recommended.
  • Mindset: You will not get the comfort of a city or town during trekking. You have to adjust to simple accommodations and limited facilities. Train your mind for that. By understanding the limitations of remote location, you will be less disappointed and enjoy the journey to the fullest.
  • Previous trek experience: Before joining the Manaslu Circuit trek, we recommend doing a few day hikes and moderate treks. It will make you mountain smart, and coping with the challenges during the Manaslu trek will become somewhat manageable.

Essential Information

Guide and porter for the Manaslu Circuit trek

Our Manaslu Circuit trek package is inclusive of a Nepali mountain guide and a local porter. We will provide a guide who is knowledgeable about the Manaslu Circuit routes.

Likewise, we work with the locals of the Manaslu region to provide porter service. Our package covers guide and porter salary, daily expenses, and insurance, but trekkers have to take care of tips by themselves.

How much should you tip your guide and porter?

You can tip 15% to 25% of the package cost to your guide and porter. It is a decent tip, but you can tip more or less as per your wish.

Tipping the guide and porter after the trek is customary in Nepal, so they may approach you. We recommend budgeting tips beforehand.

Teahouse accommodation during the Manaslu Circuit trek

During the Manaslu Circuit trek, you will spend nights in a simple tea house. It offers shared rooms and bathrooms. The accommodation facility is great till Namrung. Single rooms and Western-style toilets are also available in many places.

After Namrung, these facilities became limited. Accommodation and service options are good in Sama Gaon and Samdo villages. Although you may find single rooms or private washrooms in some tea houses till Samdo, sharing a room and washroom is a must at Dharmasala.

This resting point only has 2-3 teahouses, so you have to adjust to what is available. Some trekkers also carry tents just for Dharmasala. A sleeping bag is a necessity for the Manaslu Circuit trek.

If buying a high-quality sleeping bag is out of your budget, you can rent one in Kathmandu at a fraction of the cost. Pack all essentials, toiletries, and ample snacks for the journey.

What kind of food is available on the Manaslu Circuit trek?

During the Manaslu Circuit trek, you will eat simple food. There will be options like pasta and curry, but the flavors will not be the same as what we are used to in the city.

Carbohydrate-rich food is highly recommended during trekking. It provides enough energy for long walks and also helps you feel better at high altitudes.

We recommend our trekkers to indulge in the local dishes because they taste the best, are the freshest options, and also make the trek more meaningful.

Some of the common food items you are most likely to have during the Manaslu Circuit trek are thukpa, dal bhat, fried rice, porridge, soups, noodles, momo, Tibetan bread, thenduk, etc.

Eggs, oats, muesli, bread, pancake, and pudding are also available. Clean drinking water is available throughout the trail. Carry water purification tablets and ample snacks for the trek.

Our Manaslu Circuit trek package includes three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). However, you can buy more snacks and drinks on your own. We recommend budgeting some money for personal expenses.

Manaslu Circuit trek difficulty

The Manaslu Circuit is a challenging trek. This trek is best for trekkers who are physically fit and have previous trekking experience. We do not recommend the Manaslu Circuit trek to first-time trekkers.

You have to traverse offbeat terrain on this trek. There will be many steep uphill walks, and the trails are quite narrow in many sections. Your guide will teach you how to walk on difficult sections.

Likewise, high altitude, changing environment, and limited services also make the Manaslu Circuit trek difficult. Low oxygen levels at high altitude make walking difficult. You get tired and out of breath easily.

Crossing Larkya La Pass is the toughest section on this trek. You will walk for almost 9 hours on the day you cross the pass. The trail traverses steep glacier moraines and slopes.

Altitude sickness and how to avoid it

Altitude sickness is a normal response of your body at high altitude if you are not used to it. So, previous trekking experience and planning acclimatization days strategically in your Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary is crucial.

Our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary has a built-in acclimatization day in Sama Gaon. Similarly, we have also kept two night stops between Deng and Sama Gaon, which is great for acclimatization.

Symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, shortness of breath, no appetite, vomiting, trouble sleeping, dizziness, nausea, etc. If you feel sick or uncomfortable, inform your guide and ask for help.

Listening to your body and paying attention to the smallest discomfort is the smartest thing you can do to lower the possibility of altitude sickness during the Manaslu Circuit trek.

*Maintain your pace, ascend slowly, and keep yourself hydrated. Following this advice, you will lower the risk of altitude sickness by more than 60%.

Travel insurance for the Manaslu Circuit trek

Travel insurance for the Manaslu Circuit trek must include emergency helicopter evacuation and medical bills. Buy travel insurance in your country and bring documents with you.

Make sure the travel insurance includes necessary coverage. Note that trekkers are not allowed to trek in the Manaslu region without travel insurance. So, do not take it lightly.

*Do not plan to buy travel insurance in Nepal because it is not available.

Manaslu Circuit trek permit

For the Manaslu Circuit trek, every foreigner needs the following permits:

  • Restricted Area Permit for Manaslu (Manaslu RAP)
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit

Our Manaslu Circuit trek package includes all permits. Both conservation area permits cost USD 30 per person. The restricted area permit is expensive.

It costs USD 100 per person from September to November for the first 7 days and USD 15 per person per day after the seventh day.

Likewise, the restricted area permit cost for the Manaslu Circuit trek from December to August is USD 75 per person for the first 7 days and USD 10 per person per day after that.

Best time to trek Manaslu Circuit

Spring and autumn seasons are the best time to do the Manaslu Circuit trekking. Likewise, you can also do this trek in winter. In winter, you may have to use microspikes to cross Larkya La Pass.

Spring (March-May)

  • It is the season of flowers. The foothills of the Himalayas bloomed with rhododendrons and many other flowers. The lush scenery is back after a long winter, which makes the landscapes incredible.
  • The nights and mornings are cold, but the daytime is warm. As the days pass by, climates get warm. A very comfortable temperature for long walking.
  • There could be occasional rainfall at lower elevations and snowfall at higher. The weather, however, stays relatively stable.

Autumn (September-November)

  • Unlike spring, autumn is the season of festivity in Nepal. Nepalese people celebrate their biggest festivals, such as Dashain, Tihar, Chhath, etc. The environment is quite delightful and divine everywhere you go in Nepal.
  • It is the peak trekking season, so the trails get busier all over the Himalayas in Nepal. However, the Manaslu Circuit trek route remains less crowded because not many people do this trek.
  • Stable weather, crisp air, and low pollution make Kathmandu Valley and traveling in the higher region quite pleasant.
  • You may see occasional rainfall in September and at the start of October, but the weather stabilizes.

Nepal travel visa

Tourists must get a Nepal travel visa to enter the country for the Manaslu Circuit trek or any travel purpose.

Apart from a handful of countries, travelers from most countries can obtain a visa upon landing at Kathmandu Airport.

It is called an on-arrival visa. The process is easy and quick. Make sure you have all the required documents and visa fees ready for a quick process.

Please check more details about the Nepal travel visa on this official government site.
